The Biggest Draws This IPL

IPL 2014

IPL 7 is set to storm televisions sometime soon and cricket fans cannot wait for all the action to unfold. There is huge excitement, centering on the IPL auction, the strategies of franchises, who plays against whom and so on! Support staff, team owners and coaches do their actual planning and research before the actual event kicks off. This definitely influences team strategy at the IPL auctions. How is this so? This is because the performances of the earlier season are vital in influencing selection decisions. Teams who have not done well will always look for a total rebuilding process while others might look to add in a vital factor or two to strengthen the team even further. Teams who have seen success might not want to tamper with the winning combination and this will only prompt them to retain more players.

Whatever the 2014 IPL auction strategy might be for a particular team or franchise, there is no doubt that this IPL is set to get even more exciting than its predecessors. The auction is slated for the 12th and 13th of February and there are some players who will no doubt, be the biggest draws at the same. A major event that will kick start a virtual war among franchises is the decision on part of the Delhi Daredevils, to refrain from retaining players. What this has done, is that it has pushed the likes of Virender Sehwag, Kevin Pieterson and David Warner into the mainstream auction. Franchises are set to get locked into a war over Warner, especially as he has been in top form in recent times. He recently concluded the successful Ashes tour with an impressive 523 runs under his belt, including a couple of centuries.

On the other hand, Kevin Pieterson’s recent form slump in the Ashes should have no effect on his demand in the Indian Premier League as he is set to attract the highest bids from franchises and team owners. When it comes to Sehwag, things are still a bit dicey. Delhi might try to get him back or he might be lapped up by teams like Punjab, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Sehwag has not been in the national team for a long while and is reeling under a string of poor scores in the domestic circuit. He will still be a big draw at the auctions along with hitherto uncapped players like Shane Shillingford and Mitchell McClenaghan. The former has had an enviable season for the West Indies in 2013 and aptly complemented Sunil Narine. He has a fabulous domestic and international record, with an economy of 5.5 and average of 15.

McClenaghan earned fame in the 2013 season as well with his domestic performances, inclusion into the national team and blistering pace. He has been a permanent part of the national team and his devastating in swinger and wicket taking ability are attributes key to Twenty20 cricket.
