IPL Team News


Cricket fans and enthusiasts are waiting with bated breath for the results of the IPL auctions. Day 1 of the auctions just concluded and the franchises mostly concentrated on picking up marquee players yesterday. Many surprising results emerged out of the auction.

The IPL auction was always a matter of hot contention owing to our innate curiosity to get the latest updates on teams and their strategies. The 2014 IPL auction had all the right elements of drama, excitement and gut wrenching suspense. Here is a list of the teams that have been compiled so far:

Team Kolkata:

Team Kolkata played it with a straight bat at the auctions, bringing back all rounder Jacques Kallis and Yusuf Pathan for tidy sums. They also picked up useful Bangladeshi all rounder Shakib Al Hasan and spinner Piyush Chawla. To strengthen their bowling, the franchise went for Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar and the South African speedster Morne Morkel. The top draw however was Robin Uthappa who was bagged by Team Kolkata for an astronomical INR 5 crores. The team had earlier retained mystery spinner Sunil Narine and captain Gautam Gambhir ahead of the auctions.

Team Delhi:

Team Delhi made all the right noises at the auctions. Having released all their players, they had the biggest purse at the auctions. They chose to bring back Kevin Pieterson and also snapped up Dinesh Karthik for a mind boggling INR 12.5 crores. The franchise also bought Shami Ahmed, Manoj Tiwary, J.P. Duminy, Rahul Sharma, N Coulter Nile, Saurabh Tiwary, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and hotly anticipated batsman Quinton de Kock. Jaydev Unadkat and dashing opener Murali Vijay have also been drafted into this powerful unit.

Team Chennai:

Chennai had retained the maximum number of players in Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja. They picked up much in demand opener Dwayne Smith, Faf Du Plessis, Ben Hilfenhaus, Brendon Mccullum, Mohit Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Samuel Badree and Matt Henry.

Team Punjab:

Team Punjab also built up a formidable arsenal of players including Virender Sehwag, George Bailey, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Cheteshwar Pujara, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Glenn Maxwell, Wriddhiman Saha and Thisara Perera in addition to the retained David Miller.

Team Mumbai:

Mumbai had retained Malinga, Harbhajan Singh, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard ahead of the IPL. They drafted in superstar all rounder Corey Anderson, Zaheer Khan, Michael Hussey, Josh Hazlewood and Pragyan Ojha.

Team Rajasthan:

In addition to their retained quota of Samson, Watson, Binny, and Rahane among others, Rajasthan went for Steven Smith, Kane Richardson, Ben Cutting, Tim Southee, Brad Hodge and Abhishek Nayar.

Team Bangalore:

In addition to the retained Virat Kohli, AB De Villiers and Chris Gayle, RCB brought in Yuvraj Singh, Ravi Rampaul, Albie Morkel, Varun Aaron, Mitchell Starc, Ashok Dinda, Muttiah Muralitharan and Parthiv Patel among others.

Team Hyderabad:

In addition to the retained Dale Steyn and Shikhar Dhawan, Hyderabad bought David Warner, Darren Sammy, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Brendan Taylor, Moises Henriques, Amit Mishra, Irfan Pathan, Venugopal Rao, Jason Holder and Aaron Finch.
